The starting point for this work was a simple question: what if gravity were no longer a universal force, but a force specific to one person?

In A Gravity of Her Own, the space around the woman appears to be governed by a gravity of its own. The large masses of fabric respond to an invisible force that seems to originate from her presence rather than from the world around her. Yet she remains completely calm. She does not experience what is happening as strange; within her reality, this is simply how the world behaves.

I was interested in making the impossible feel natural rather than treating it as an extraordinary event. The painting remains grounded in a convincing physical world, while one of its fundamental laws has quietly changed.

The title refers to this imagined physical law, but also leaves open the possibility of understanding gravity in a more personal sense — as something that shapes the space around an individual.

The red, blue and pink fabrics also allowed me to explore the material language of oil through visible brushwork, layered colour, texture and variations in density. Their movement and material presence are essential to the painting: the physicality of the paint makes the impossible law tangible.
